Independent boards Irish cycling drama ‘The Racer’ from ‘Love & Friendship’

London-based sales and production outfit Independent has boarded cycling drama The Racer and will be introducing the project to buyers in Cannes.

Louis Talpe (Of Kings And Prophets), Tara Lee (A Date For Mad Mary), Matteo Simoni (Gangsta), Iain Glen (Game Of Thrones) and Karel Roden (The Bourne Supremacy) lead the cast of the feature, which is being produced by Katie Holly (Love & Friendship) and Yvonne Donohoe of Irish outfit Blinder Films.

Jesus Gonzalez-Elvira of Calach Films is co-producing with Caviar Films’ Robin Kerremans and Dimitri Verbeeck.

Kieron J. Walsh, co-director of production company Blinder, is directing the project and co-wrote the screenplay with Ciaran Cassidy. The film is set in 1998, when the opening stages of famed cycling tournament the Tour de France was held in Ireland for the first time. It follows a rider who, after being dropped from the team, is reinstated following a doping error.

The project will shoot in Ireland and Luxembourg in early summer this year. Backers include Screen Ireland, Film Fund Luxembourg, Eurimages, Screen Flanders, the BAI Sound & Vision Fund and RTE. Kinepolis Film Distribution (KFD) will release the film in the Benelux territory.

“I distinctly remember the Tour de France descending into Ireland in 1998 and the buzz that it brought with it,” said director Walsh on the project. “That tour proved to be a challenging time for cycling, filled with scandal, emotion and turmoil and I am confident that the film will just as thrilling.”

Game of Thrones’ Iain Glen on Cleverman, Jorah and Daenerys, and Why the Greyscale Has Him Worried

tumblr_o824ypP97e1v101dyo1_1280

Do you ever pull pranks on set, or did Emilia Clarke ever prank you on Game of Thrones? Because you used to be quite the prankster when you were younger. You’d pretend to be different people?

I did, I did! [Laughs.] It was possibly the early signs of becoming an actor. There was a radio show, a kind of current-events show, and we dominated the airwaves, my friend Nicky Campbell and me. We used to call in, and based on any given show, we would adopt different voices and different personas, and suggest the most ridiculous things, just on the edge of plausibility. We’d ring up and say, [imitates voice of an elderly man] “I’m a glue manufacturer, and I’ve invented a glue that’s safe for the children to sniff! And it has not lost its stickiness!” And the host would be so bemused that he would believe us.

Anything more recently? Perhaps not while you were shooting the Jorah-and-Dany goodbye. She seems to have pulled more of the pranks during the fire scene shoot.

I actually just did the commentary for the DVD extras for the fire scene. It’s great. I think it was an echo of the scene that we had in the first season, when Khal Drogo’s body was burned on the pyre and she emerged. And both times, the audience sees her through Jorah’s eyes. You can understand his total love and admiration of this girl.

And we can see she loves him too, in her own way, when she commands him to find a cure for the greyscale.

Yeah, yeah. But it’s a worry. They’ve got a worried actor on their hands. For any actor on the show, most of the time we’re just thinking, “Please keep me alive!” I’ve been very lucky to be a part of the show, right back to the pilot. If I go out in the madness of greyscale, then I’ll have thought I’ve done very well. It’s been a complete treat to be a part of the show. They’re a lovely group of people. But the greyscale has definitely got this actor worried, I’ll be honest about that.

Dark Romance My Cousin Rachel Recruits Iain Glen

Now that principal photography has been slated to get underway next week – April 4, to be exact – Fox Searchlight is beefing up its cast for upcoming adaptation, My Cousin Rachel.

iain-glen

With Rachel Weisz, Sam Claflin and Holliday Grainger already on board, Variety is reporting that Game of Thrones stalwart Iain Glen and stage actor Simon Russel Bleale have agreed to star in the feature film, itself based on the epynomous novel penned by Daphne du Maurier.

The movie is being adapted for the silver screen by director Roger Michell (Notting Hill,Enduring Love), who expressed his own excitement about steering du Maurier’s “detailed, dark, sexy and cinematic” story into theaters. For Michell, “so many really great films have grown out of the works of Daphne Du Maurier: ‘Don’t Look Now,’ ‘The Birds,’ ‘Rebecca’… .and here’s another of her classics which is at once detailed, dark, sexy, cinematic and full of surprises. I look forward to bringing this thrilling story to the screen with such a brilliant cast.”

Indeed, My Cousin Rachel has graced cinemas before when, in 1952, screen icons Olivia de Havilland and Richard Burton assumed the central parts. Orbiting around the plight of a young Englishman, du Maurier’s romantic novel imagines a scenario where our protagonist plots revenge against his mesmerizing cousin, only to find himself falling under her beguiling charm.

Kevin Loader and Anita Overland are attached to produce on behalf of Free Range Films, and given production has been slated to begin on April 4, expect filming to continue on Michell’s adaptation into the summer, with England and Italy acting as the two primary locations.

Best way to get a signed photo from Iain

I have had quite a number of emails recently asking how to obtain signed photographs of Iain glen so here is all the information you need.

The best and quickest way to get a response from Iain or indeed any actor when writing to them is to include a stamped addressed ‘hardback’ envelope (especially when you live outside the UK) which for those of you that don’t know what one is, it’s an envelope with your name, address and enough postage on it to cover the cost of returning it to you with the photos in.  It’s best to get your post office to weigh the envelope it so you know how much postage to put on it. It means that Iain himself doesn’t need to go the post office and pay for the postage it’s already on the envelope ready for him to post it back to you.

So when you write to Iain you  make sure you have the following included in your hardback envelope:

Your letter to Iain
Your photos or item/s you would like signed
Your SAE (stamped addressed envelope big enough to fit your photos in and with correct postage)

Of course  there is no guarantee that Iain will reply but he is pretty good at responding when he isn’t working.
